Carrol Boyes
A passionate South African, Carrol Boyes spent the first part of her career as an art and English language teacher. Her first functional sculptures were introduced to the market in 1989. They have been highly acclaimed in numerous exhibitions in South Africa and abroad and have appeared on the pages of Australian Vogue and The New York Times. They are now recognised world-wide as representing a unique contribution to modern day decor and design.
The Carrol Boyes Difference
Carrol Boyes' functional art appeals to the discerning buyer and as a result is found in shops such as Hendri Bendel and Saks 6th Ave in New York City and Georgio in Los Angeles. Stunningly different and sensuously tactile, Carrol's handcrafted items create opportunities for unique individual expression in a variety of home, corporate and social settings.
Because her range is extensive and continually growing, items make ideal contemporary gifts. Being both decorative and functional they are treasured by those fortunate to receive them. Most of our business comes from repeat sales to individuals and companies.
Originality is the hallmark of Carrol Boyes’ creations and her designs have become icons in a world that’s so often filled with bland and repetitive forms and ideas. All her creations carry a Carrol Boyes stamp and rare pieces are individually numbered.
The Making of Each Piece
Her pewter forms products are cast on the family farm in the Northern Province of South Africa. Her craft factory is highly valued by the local Letsitele community for the jobs it creates and the skills training it provides. Final filing, grinding and polishing is done in Cape Town by specialist staff. By the time a sugar ladle is ready for the market it will have passed through 15 crafting and five quality checking stages! No robots, only humans involved! Each piece is therefore slightly different.Click on these thumnail pictures to see some of the origination and processing steps. . . .
The pewter she uses is lead free and of the highest Belgian and English quality. Stainless steel blades are acquired from the best English and Japanese sources including Sheffield. Renowned quality South Africa steel is used for her Stainless Steel Range. Fine South African spun and cast aluminium is used for many of her dishes, bowls and vases.
Caring for pewter items
Pewter is cared for by very occasionally polishing items gently with an all purpose metal polish such as Reckitt and Coleman’s Wenol. The effort in maintaining the metal’s lustre is minimal compared to maintaining silver. There is only one caution and that is that pewter items should not be placed in the dishwasher as dishwashing chemicals can dull the lustre. If by accident they are affected by these chemicals, the lustre can easily be restored by applying a metal polish.
